How many American colleges actually have a medieval-style cloister? Bryn Mawr College, an all female liberal arts college of 1,600 in suburban Philadelphia, is one of the few. It is said that Bryn Mawr is the first college in the US to feature the now ubiquitous “Collegiate Gothic” style. Ten of Bryn Mawr’s buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Many American colleges feature stone arches to welcome students and visitors to the campus. Bryn Mawr College boasts two splendid examples; the arch at Rockefeller Hall, and the arch which acts as the College’s visual front door, The Kathryn McBride arch at Pembroke Hall.
And then, of course, there are modern buildings at Bryn Mawr too, designed to blend into the Gothic styled quads, and featuring state of the art facilities for learning.
